METALLICA |
Date: 9th April, 2013 Stern Pinball today officially announced that their next game would be Metallica, themed on the metal band of the same name. The announcement was made with a promotional video which you can see here:
The video of Stern's latest music pinball gives us a lot of information about the game, so let's go through it all. Metallica Pinball features a dozen of the group's most popular songs:
The playfield is shown in a number of guises, from the Solidworks model...
...to the whitewood, shown on a rotisserie with game designer John Borg...
...to a more-populated playfield complete with back panel.
There are three key playfield mechanisms features in the video - the electric chair, the hammer and the cross target.
The style of model used matches the artwork designed for the playfield and the translite/backglass.
The second playfield assembly is the hammer mechanism which comes down over the ball and makes it 'disappear'.
The ball is held on a magnet while the hammer comes down over it. The magnet then drops down like the Genie magnet in Tales of the Arabian Nights, taking the ball with it and sending it to an under-playfield ball lock, which ejects via a scoop on the right.
The hammer has a highly stylised plastic cover featuring the faces of the band members. Here's the sketch of it.
The final toy is a moving cross target with a motor to drive it up and down.
The style of the artwork and models matches that of the earlier Metallica game which was a conversion of Earthshaker! by Dirty Donny, Wade Krause and Tanio Klyce, and shown at the Pacific Pinball Expo in 2009.
The style continues to the dot matrix display animations, ideas for which are also shown in the video.
We'll be bringing you much more about Stern's new Metallica pinball over the coming days and weeks, so keep watching Pinball News for all the latest news.
