TRON:LEGACY

Stern have released two pictures of their upcoming Tron pinball machines.

The Avatar-style 3D Tron backglass
The Avatar-style 3D Tron backglass

The game is called 'Tron Legacy' after the most recent movie in the franchise, while the backglass image uses a slightly re-framed version of the artwork used for the Blu-Ray release.

The cabinet artwork features two light cycle racers - the gold one in front, the blue one in the background - with the game name relegated to the back of the game and beneath the coin door.

The Tron cabinet

The character Gem is featured on the right side of the backbox, as shown in Stern's picture above.  Quorra will be shown on the left side of the backbox, while the left side of the main cabinet depicts the blue light cycle in the foreground, with the gold one in the background - the opposite way round to the artwork on the right side.

The playfield and cabinet shots give us an insight into the features to be found in the game and the mechanical devices on the playfield.

The playfield

At the top of the playfield is a CSI-style spinning disc protected by a motorised 3-bank of standup targets.

Over the top of the disc are two light-cycle ramps - one blue and one gold.

The gold ramp is shot by the upper flipper.  Yes that's right, this is Stern's first three-flippered game since CSI and the upper flipper can shoot the side ramp, into the pop bumpers, the standups 3-bank, the two standups either side of the left ramp, and a short hairpin lane just above the side ramp.

Next to the upper flipper is the left entrance to the orbit lane, then we have the left ramp, a second hairpin lane with a spinner, the 3-bank, the right hairpin lane, the side ramp and the right orbit with another spinner.

Unusually, the pop bumpers are on the lower right of the playfield, with the right orbit shot through them.

Below the pop bumpers is a video game scoop representing Flynn's Arcade.

The lower half of the playfield

There is an exit lane from the pop bumpers to the right of the scoop which feeds into the two inlanes on the right which help spell C-L-U.  This is assisted by a single inlane on the left side while above it are some side-mounted standup targets.

The two inlanes and the orbit shot through the pop bumpers are reminiscent of earlier Pat Lawlor designs such as Funhouse, where the upper flipper side shot and the position of the scoop are also somewhat familiar.

Running down the centre  of the playfield are the characters to be collected to progress towards the game's final mode; Quorra, Zuse, Clu, Gem and Flynn.

With no top rollover lanes and a shifted centre-line (thanks to the two inlanes on the right), Tron looks like it will feature a different style of play to recent Stern offerings.  As always, you can find the very latest Tron new and reviews here at Pinball News.

Tron is one of the most eagerly-awaited games from Stern in many years.  Now you've had your first look, what do you think?  Does it live up to expectations?  Are you planning to buy one?

Jeff Parsons:
It's Funhouse with a Tron theme, but I like it!

Underlord:
I have been awaiting this title for awhile now and can say that it looks like Stern is really trying to give us what we want. Looks to have some flow, the three bank targets that drop look fun, as they were on Spiderman, and the spinning disk looks interesting (almost like POTC). I like the fact that Stern got away from the wild play of Ironman with the magnets, as these made the game entertaining but short-lived and made the player feel out of control at times.

Some bad points (and a spoiler alert): Where is Rinzler (Tron) in all of this? Gem was a minor character and she has status on the playfield? Also, where is Sam Flynn in all of this??? Ok, off of soapbox now... :)

I hope for few more things for this title.
One: Deep ruleset! And Wizard modes...something to continue to play it for.
Two: Great lightshow, and the original Daft Punk soundtrack!
Three: Non pixelated graphics on the cab and the playfield!

As always, playability is king and I will be playing this before buying it.

GNN:
Great to see something about this game! Is there pictures in higher quality as well?

Good work, as always, Pinball News.

Jonathan Joosten:
Finally some larger pics :) The game does look great, but (as with Avatar) I did not see the movie and collecting character of who I do not know who or what they are does not appeal to me that much. The downside of using licensed themes. Still looking forward to play the game.

Mark Henderson:
Cool. What a great looking playingfield. I am looking forward to playing the game at my local arcade or at a tournament in the near future. Keep up the good work at Stern. I like illuminated wires on the ramps and this might be a feature found on the LE model as well as toys.

PinDude:
I'm with Jeff P. on this one. The playfield seems to be ripped straight out of a Funhouse, but if you are going to copy a previous game, at least they choose a classic. Color scheme looks good - I think that this may be a winner...

Mr Tobias:
After the so-so Avatar and the borderline dreadful Rolling Stones, first impressions suggest this could be a step in the right direction. Perhaps one that is worth watching, and about time too.

I had no problem with the cosmetically enhanced Limited Edition versions of old such as Elvis Gold. However I do not like Stern's current policy of turning out a cut down version of the game (the 'Pro' model) at a price that would have bought a fully featured game just three years ago, and then asking a very high price indeed for a complete version of the game (LE model), albeit with the cosmetic enhancements included. This smacks of cynical marketing and a strategy to milk existing customers.

gbw6700:
I definitely want this one! Could be my first NIB pinball. But I really want to see what the LE version will add to it.

Mnpinball:
One of the most anticipated titles in a long time.

This was to be John Borg's homage to Steve Ritchie and it looks great. It's Funhouse meets Spider-Man. Two great pins as well. The formula works. Love the pops down low and the spinner shots.

Tom Uban was contracted to program this game, ex-WMS programmer who did NBAFB, Corvette, and Johnny Mnemonic. It's known to be very deep with many modes and a players pin. It will be a fresh change in gameplay of the past Sterns and will be welcomed.

Daft Punk movie soundtrack is in the game and it's perfect for the theme.

The LE will have EL wire lighting and a 4 bank drop target set in place of the standups, as well as a moving toy among some other features.

I have to agree with others, I would prefer to pay another $200 to have a game that was intended as the designer wanted and forget the cosmetic chrome crap and lighted apron, rails, etc. Give me the full meal deal and I'll add my shaker kit.

Leslie:
this machine is a half mirrored spider-man, half fun house :)

World of pinball:
Another marvelous under achievement by Stern thanks for proving why we need another company building games. My money is on JJP WOZ

Tom Uban is the part time programmer for this game. So how much can we expect?

Lemonjuice:
I gotta say, this looks like a step in the right direction, I'm pleased that Stern is getting at least a little innovative with the playfield layout (aka the funhouse bumpers) but I think the artwork on this table is atrocious. It's just another blue background, Tron is synonymous with neon lights in parallel beams etc. and I don't see any of that. If there's anything Tron is famous for it's its visual style and unfortunately, I think Stern really missed a great opportunity with this license. That said, how the game plays matters much much more to me :D Couldn't we have gotten some Circus Voltaire neon tubes? so easy!

Xiaou2:
Very disappointing. - The artwork is Dull and Boring. It represents the 2nd movie in many ways though, which isnt a good thing. A Tron based on the Original would be 2000x better...

- At first I got excited to see what Looked like a classic Steve Ritchie lightning quick "double loop", from the right ramp leading back to the 3rd flipper as a feed-back into more loops. However, then I realized the ramps just fed back to the flippers. Snore.

- All the work to open the center target.. and what do you get? A cheesy center spinning disc. Whoop T doo. The only place this really worked well on was Whirlwind, where it was in the center of the Playfield.. It makes no sense on this machine, nor POTC. Its not exciting nor fun.

- The Pop bumpers by the ramps/main pathway ... is stupid Imop. Always has been. - Theres a few interesting thing about the layout.. but overall, I just dont see it being that good. At very least, theres a 3rd flipper... but thats not saying much.

This cant be a Steve Ritchie game. It has more hallmarks to a Pat Lawlor game. I like very few of Lawlors games... and Funhouse isnt one of them.

Overall, Ive never been a Stern fan, but at least with LOTR, they put some effort into it. (and even then, LOTR cant touch a good Williams machine) Here we see the typical Stern rush job, cut corners, simplistic crappy design with recycled parts they were trying to get rid of.

Very sad indeed. This Could have been a smash hit machine... If only they had a Talent behind them... and were willing to actually invest in quality, rather than trying to sell hotdogs at steak prices.

Rvdv:
game needs more dept i believe try to make games more like : twilight, attack, totan, ttng, etc

game looks cool but gameplay could become boring soon i would love to buy a new version of Stargate (tv show)!!!!!!

how about Dukes of Hazzard !!!!!! Superman !!!

Freakandgeek:
Better have the Daft Punk soundtrack...the best movie soundtrack in ages.

Swinks:
Pop bumpers and orbit similar to a whitewater, looking to seeing a video of the game play.

Pinballace:
I am looking forward to playing this game and quite possible owning it too. So far its a better looking Stern game since POTC and have higher expectations for this game to have more depth to it.

Steve:
Forget the negativity - deposit is going down for an LE next week! Well done Stern!!

Drunkeykong:
Looks Ok,Better than some other sterns. But it is a clone of Funhouse or a mirror image of the spiderman playfield with the sandman targets where Rudy would be. The spinning disk is left over from Pirates or CSI. Nothing original, DVD cover art? NO EL wire? It is 2011 give us a pin that has something new added not the same old playfields rehashed over and over again. Sterns motto "Same pins different stickers"

Big12bus:
Looks like a very good game from Stern. Thank god we have a pinball mfg. who can actually stay in business and continue to make great games. I am thinking this will become an instant classic.

Canadian Pinhead:
Its going to be an interesting year with pinball. Stern might be 'back-pedalling' a bit with the announcement of Jersey Jack there. Game on now! As my favorite saying goes...."He who has the most toys (when he dies) wins!" Oh, and I will usually buy the machine with the most toys as well!

This game has definately raised my eyebrow.

Hooked:
A step in the right direction for Stern. Hope they sell a ton. Also home they are out of blue ink. Last few pins if set up side by side would blend.

Pinsb4food:
I agree, lets try to forget the negativity and let Stern do it s thing. This is a serious step in the right direction, lets not take anything away from it and look as the positives.

Three flippers, multiple ramps and plenty of targets plus hopefully decent rules that s more the direction we want. After Avatar I have to admit I was slightly worried, but this is a great looking game that looks like it has plenty of potential. With Steve Richie back on board doing what he does best and excited as ever on his current project or theme (listen to spooky pinball 13.5) as well as Lyman back on board this is a good time for pinball enthusiasts with two pinball manufacturers fighting it out and the winner is pinball.

Mark5ok:
I'm curious to see if Stern's marketing idea of having 3 different price brackets (Limited Edition, Arcade Edition, Home Edition) is really going to work...

It seems to me, that the idea is just going to disappoint a lot of people. I mean, now you can go to a bar (arcade, etc...) and spend your hard earned money on a machine that isn't even their "top-of-the-line" pinball (with all the extra features)? It's just going to make ME wonder... what am I missing... and WHY am I paying for a "lesser" gameplay experience??

Jim Burrill:
I see the similarity to Funhouse and Spiderman as a very positive thing. I hope that my local Cinemark Movies 10 and Nickelrama get this machine. I will be in to play it.

My wish list for the programmers:
1. Make the side ramp much more lucrative than the other shots and very obviously so, the way it is in Earthshaker, Whirlwind, Funhouse, TAF. That contributes to a very exciting game that feels like when a homerun is hit in baseball.
2. Make point amount 1 significant value- this will help new players understand what's happening better. 1000, 3000, or 1 million are good. 270, 1370 are bad.
3. Values about 1 million should be only for very significant awards. I think T2 has good award values that excite but don't intimidate a new player.

also, on future games, I'd like to the see the score format used on Monopoly to Spiderman. The format used since Wheel of Fortune is not attractive.

The Martins:
You are right when you said a long awaited game. This pin looks great and YES.. I think I'm gonna have a talk with the wife tonight about putting our order in.

Ericball:
I'm curious to see if Stern's marketing idea of having 3 different price brackets (Limited Edition, Arcade Edition, Home Edition) is really going to work...

I can only assume that the LEs sell 'cause they keep making them. But I think Stern discovered with LotR SE is they have to make them part of the first run or they might not be able to get the same toys. The unfortunate thing is it seems the Pro is a cut-down LE.

And although I understand the logic behind the Classic Home Edition, I wonder whether the 10-20% discount in price is enough to sway buyers. Much more significant is getting these games into mass merchants.

PinGod:
Stern must be doing something right. I just purchased a TRON LE pinball without even seeing the final design. Daft Punk and TRON just impossible to resist. First NIB. Can't wait to see what I bought. Haven't been a great STERN fan. Got a great feeling about this one though. Psyched.

Pinhead:
Playfield is fine - but familiar layout. It works.

Funhouse ! I don't think so ? Maybe the flipper arrangement. Looks just like Spiderman with the flipper moved to opposite side.

RULES/software development will make this table. Hope the developer's skills/love for the game - come close to that of the designer... Good Luck !

ZF:
Already have a spot picked out for the LE.... Bring it on...

Centaur Machine:
When I heard there was a new Tron Pinball - released in 2011 - I was pretty excited. I absolutely love the electric blue on black theme of the movie.

The artwork looks fine, but I imagined it being sort of completely futuristic, with CFL blacklighting and such.

Really disappointed, if I'm honest. I'm sure the 3D background and the sound will be very cool though.
