And
so to the finals.
With
all three finals running simultaneously on different machines, it
wasn't possible to keep track of all the scores on all the games.
The veterans' competition was completed first on the Creature From
The Black Lagoon with Sampo Simonen from Finland coming out the winner.
The
women's final finished next with a win for Claudine Leonhardt on the
Cirqus Voltaire.
The
Dutch Masters continued into the last ball for each player on the
Whitewater. Kevin Martin looked comfortably ahead with 253M but was
beaten by 271M from Michel van den Elzen. Taco Wouters had a bad run
of the ball ending with 34M, about the same score Albert Nomden started
with on his last ball.
Little
did we suspect, but he had been building his game to get to just this
point. He started 5x playfield and then went straight into multiball.
He immediately scored three 90M jackpots as the balls were kicked
out onto the upper playfield and by the time the display had stopped
showing the jackpot animations and the scores reappeared, Albert had
won and applause broke out.
After a short break, the
prizes were awarded for all the competitions and the raffle prizes
drawn.

If you weren't interested
in the competition then play continued in the recreational hall all
day. By Sunday most of the faulty machines had been fixed and as it
was also Mother's Day in The Netherlands there were fewer people and
vacant games were easily found.
|
Another improvement
this year was the number of parts suppliers. Both days saw at
least six different stalls with a good variety of parts, spares,
novelties, manuals, books and posters.
As you can see opposite,
it wasn't just fuses, bulbs and spinner decals on offer but
some major hardware and complete assemblies together with bulk
lots of targets and switches.
Personally I thought
that some of the prices were rather high for what are still
fairly common parts. I baulked at paying 7 Euros just for a
clear bumper cap. There were some reasonable deals around too
but generally I'd rather buy my disposables elsewhere.
|
In conclusion,
this year's show was an improvement over last year's in most areas.
The competition largely kept to the schedule and finished on time.
Problems were kept to a minimum and the new competition format for
the Masters works well. Back in the recreational room, lighting was
much improved and there was a better selection of spares.

The suggestions
for improvements are now mainly selfish and concern communication.
It's great that so many of the announcements are in English that you
really miss them when they are not. Between competition rounds it
wasn't always announced in English when the next round would start
and the games in the recreational hall where access was controlled
by the NFV staff wasn't explained. Selfish complaints I grant you
but then everything else went well.
So congratulations
to the show's organisers for another great event and let's look forward
to the 2004 show.
